Meet Alan Bee Psychotherapist

About me

I offer psychotherapy in a calm, thoughtful and straightforward way. My focus is on helping people understand what is happening for them and supporting change that feels realistic and sustainable.

My work is informed by many years of professional experience across healthcare and mental health settings. This has shaped a steady, reflective way of working, where the emphasis is on thinking things through carefully rather than rushing towards solutions.

I work using CBT-based approaches and EMDR, choosing what is most helpful for the individual rather than applying a fixed method. People come to see me for different reasons. Some are dealing with stress, low mood or anxiety; others are affected by the ongoing impact of difficult experiences or are feeling stuck despite generally functioning well. I also work with people who want to improve confidence, focus or performance around exams, work or other important areas of life.

I have a particular interest in working with health and social care professionals, who are often managing high levels of responsibility and emotional demand. Therapy can offer space to reflect, regain perspective and reconnect with what matters.

Alongside therapy, I offer clinical supervision to CBT practitioners and trainees, including those working towards BABCP accreditation. My supervision work is reflective, supportive and grounded in evidence-based practice.

Frequently asked questions

What is CBT and EMDR?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an umbrella term for a range of evidence-based approaches that explore the links between our thoughts, emotions, physical reactions and behaviour. CBT-based therapies can help you notice patterns that may be keeping difficulties going and support you to develop more helpful ways of responding to what you’re experiencing. CBT is widely used and well supported by research across a broad range of difficulties.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is another evidence-based therapy that focuses on how distressing or overwhelming experiences are processed and stored by the brain. Sometimes experiences don’t fully settle and continue to have an emotional impact, even long after they’ve happened. EMDR works with the brain’s natural capacity to process these experiences, helping reduce their emotional intensity so they no longer feel intrusive, overwhelming or “stuck”.

EMDR follows a structured approach and can be helpful for a wide range of difficulties, whether these are linked to specific past events, ongoing stress, or experiences that are hard to put into words.

In practice, we would decide together whether CBT, EMDR, or a combination of approaches feels most helpful for you.

What happens if I want you to help me?

If you’re interested in working together, the first step is to get in touch using the contact form below. In your message, you don’t need to go into lots of detail — just a brief outline of what’s been difficult is enough.

If we both feel it would be helpful to continue, we would then arrange an assessment session. Early sessions focus on understanding what’s been going on for you and making sense of the difficulties you’re experiencing. Together, we would agree some realistic and meaningful goals, so the work is tailored to you rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

From there, we would work using evidence-based approaches such as CBT or EMDR, depending on what feels most appropriate. CBT involves developing new ways of responding to thoughts, emotions and behaviours, while EMDR focuses on helping the brain process experiences that continue to have an emotional impact. We would move at a pace that feels manageable and collaborative.

While no therapy can offer guarantees, I am committed to working thoughtfully and carefully with you, using approaches that are well supported by research and guided by your individual needs.

Is there anything you don’t treat?

I do not offer specialist treatment for psychosis, bipolar disorder, personality disorder or crisis situations. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or feel at risk of harming yourself or others, please seek urgent support via your GP, NHS 111, A&E, or the Samaritans on 116 123.

Where and when do we meet?

Sessions are usually held online, using a secure video platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Online therapy allows flexibility and works well for both CBT and EMDR.

For online sessions, it’s helpful to use a laptop or a larger tablet, particularly if we are working with EMDR. Please make sure you are in a private, quiet space, where you feel able to talk openly and won’t be overheard or interrupted.

There may also be limited opportunities for face-to-face sessions if you are local to Devon. This can be discussed during our initial conversation, depending on availability.

How much does it cost?

Sessions are 50 minutes long and cost £85. Sessions are paid for in advance via bank transfer.

Cancellations made with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged at 50% of the session fee, and cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged at the full session fee.

I am a recognised provider with BUPA, WPA, AXA, Aviva and Allianz. Please check your policy details before booking.
